Mars spacecraft landing: a look back at China’s Tianwen-1 mission and the Zhurong rover’s arrival at Utopia Planitia in May 2021.

Mars Spacecraft Landing: China’s Tianwen-1 Milestone

A Mars spacecraft landing marked a major step for China’s Tianwen-1 mission in May 2021. The lander carried the Zhurong rover to Utopia Planitia, a broad region in the planet’s northern hemisphere. Our original report covered the arrival as the mission moved towards surface exploration.

The rover took its name from a Chinese god of fire. In addition, the mission combined an orbiter, a lander and a rover. A research paper on the landing site records the touchdown on 15 May 2021.

Why Landing on the Red Planet Is Difficult

A Mars spacecraft landing involves a demanding transition from flight to the surface. The planet has an atmosphere, but it is much thinner than Earth’s. Therefore, engineers must plan carefully for the descent and the final approach.

The history of exploration also shows how difficult the task can be. For example, ESA’s Beagle 2 failed to communicate after its planned arrival in 2003. Read ESA’s Beagle 2 overview for the mission background.

Mars Spacecraft Landing and Surface Operations

Reaching the surface was only one stage of Zhurong’s mission. Afterwards, the rover needed to send information back to its team on Earth. Meanwhile, the Tianwen-1 orbiter provided a relay for those communications.

ESA later explored whether Mars Express could also receive data from the rover. Its October 2021 update describes preparations for those tests. This gives readers another way to follow the mission beyond the initial touchdown.
